Community rummage sale proceeds help local residents
The Citizens for Community Improvement will hold a community rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the center, located in downtown Friendsville. All proceeds will go toward Christmas baskets and toys for needy families in the Friendsville community.Friendsville United Methodist Church will also have a sale the same day.
Nominations sought for awards event
Keep Blount Beautiful and Little River Watershed Association are seeking nominations for the annual Blount County Environmental Achievement Awards. The awards honor individuals, businesses and organizations that make significant contributions to the betterment of the Blount County environment. Categories include individual; building re-use; businesses and corporations; civic or government/schools; church and non-profits; and the Bravo Award. Nominations are due by May 16.
Sock hop, dinner fundraiser set May 17
The Men in Mission of Saint Paul Lutheran Church will present a Back to the '50s evening May 17.
Attendees will experience a sock hop in the gym setting and are invited to wear '50s attire, eat at the diner and dance the night away to that wonderful music of the past.
The event is a fundraiser that will benefit the community and congregation. Tickets are $10 per person. A mixer will be held at 6:45 p.m. The diner will open at 7:30, with dancing, karaoke contest and limbo stick at 8:30 p.m.

Cancer survivors to be recognized
Cancer survivors are being asked to join hundreds of American Cancer Society teams and individuals who will celebrate the winning fight against the disease at Relay For Life of Blount County, on June 6 at Maryville College.
Cancer survivors will be recognized during the opening ceremony with medallions. They will also receive goody bags and T-shirts and will kickoff the 12-hour event with the first walk around the track.
Registration for survivors begins at 5 p.m. June 6 on the college campus.

Duncan named new Dogwood head
Lisa C. Duncan has been named the new Dogwood Arts Festival executive director in Knoxville. She is presently director of marketing for the News Sentinel and is the cochair for the upcoming 50th anniversary next year.
She will take over June 9.
'Double Vision' exhibit runs through July 12
The exhibit "Double Vision" will be on display now through July 12 a Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church Art Gallery, 2931 Kingston Pike. The exhibit features the work of Judy Jorden and Peggy Leland. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday. Admission is free.
